LEJOG Day 13 – Brampton to Innerleithen (Remembering Steve Legg)

Today was to be a long hard day. We had extended our route in order to reach our accommodation. It was a cold today and unlike the previous few days, the sun didn’t shine and it was overcast all day.

Also, the wind was coming from the NE and so was mainly against us.

There was a substantial amount of climbing and my right knee began to let me know that it was feeling the load.

I had heard that after about 6 days, that the jelly legs would transform into legs of steel. I have not experienced such a transformation and day by day my legs are increasingly telling me that they are tired and don’t really want to climb the hills. I’ve done quite a bit of walking.

On the other hand, my bike comes into it’s own on a downhill. The deep section wheels and light frame helping me roll along very nicely.

Today especially, we had to work together as a team in order to make progress against the wind and hills!

A silver lining was crossing into Scotland. I have never been to Scotland and so it was exciting to cross the border, although we almost missed it with a rather innocuous sign in a layby!

After a long hard morning, we had a welcome stop at a community hub and café in Eskdalemuir.

Muir was my maiden name and my ancestors on my father’s side did come from Scotland, where Muir means Moor.

The scenery continues to evolve as we travel North and does not disappoint.

We made better progress in the afternoon as there was less climbing and we were very happy o arrive at St Ronan’s Hotel.

After a shower and some stretches we walked out to a nearby pub for a well earned dinner. Then back for an early night!
