LEJOG Day 8 – Market Drayton to Culcheth

The day started with a beautiful sunrise at our accommodation at the Stables.

We set off on our route and as usually seems to be the case, the first section after breakfast or lunch seems to be a climb.

It was a clear sunny day and pleasing to note that the elevation was described as ‘gentle’!

The riding was truly enjoyable with gently rolling landscape. We were able to make much better progress today.

We didn’t encounter any road blocks or diversions today, but we did have to wait for a herd of 250 cows to cross the road!.

On to Nantwich where we began to see canals and barges as we passed over bridges.

We were signposted to Knutsford. I remarked that I had only been to the motorway services in Knutsford. That was certainly a dis-service to the place. Firstly we passed through the picturesque historic town. Then through Tatton Park which was the most beautiful Park with magnificent stags and an expansive lake.

As we continued North I was amazed to see Manchester in the distance and signposts to Warrington. Somehow we have come North.

Our accommodation tonight is a Cosy Apartment in Birchwood

Steve Legg

I have been following the updates about Steve who has been battling cancer for some time. Aware that Steve had been admitted to hospital and possibly at end of life, I have been thinking of him and his dear family at this difficult time.

As I am riding for a cancer charity, it seemed poignant to know that Steve was going through this. It was during this day that the update came through that Steve had passed away the evening before.

This was the message from Steve’s wife, Bekah:

Friends, thank you so much for standing with Steve, the girls and me over these last 17 months.

Yesterday evening, Steve finally left us. Saying goodbye to him is the hardest thing that we have ever had to do and we already miss him more than words can say.

As we left the hospital that last time, there was the most glorious sunset, the heavens literally lighting up to welcome a precious son home.

We never wanted this day to come, but we are glad this last week is over and Steve is safe now with no more tears or pain. He died knowing he was loved by so many and now he is with the one who loves him most. There is enormous comfort in that.

We know many of you will want to send flowers or meals, but honestly we don’t need any.

In time, I’ll let you know details of how and when we’ll give thanks for his life but for now, just thank you for loving him and us so well.

I think that we also appreciated the sunset, and also the sunrise at our previous accommodation.

I didn’t feel comfortable posting the LEJOG update straight away given that the focus should rightly be on Steve and his family.

I have decided that I will dedicate this LEJOG ride to Steve Legg. Whilst I am riding I am recalling memories of Steve and times spent over some decades.

When I get back, I plan to write a blog entry to celebrate Steve and my personal memories of such a top guy whom I have greatly respected and been inspired by. So for now, onward with LEJOG – remembering Steve Legg!
